Type Locality and Naming

PONDICHERRY OUTCROP: Named after Mettuveli village, Pondicherry. Type locality = Canal adjacent to the village Mettuveli (Rajagopal, 1965)


Lithology and Thickness

Clayey Sandstone. Sandy shale and fine sandstone with molds and phosphate casts of shell debris and phosphatic and calcareous concretions. Thickness of the formation is 150 m (Sundaram et al., 2001).

Depositional setting

The finer-grain-size of the formation and phosphatic character are suggestive of Transgression and omission environments. The abundance of Mollusca indicates a shelf environment (Sundaram et al., 2001).
